Polarity is the principle of energy in motion. That energy emerges from and returns to a central unified source. This same law operates in the atom, in the solar system, in the earth, and in the human body. Energy currents flow in, through and around in pulsating waves that form definite patterns. As soon as a circuit is interrupted, changes begin to appear. In the human body that interruption is interpreted as pain or disease. “A cure constitutes reaching the life current within and re-establishing the free flow of energy.”
Polarity Therapy is dynamic, holistic healthcare system that recognizes “energy as the vital force in the body and the foundation of all life.” It utilizes a fourfold approach to re-establish balance and optimal health: Therapeutic / Energy-Based Bodywork, which seeks to resolve imbalances (symptoms and dis-eases) that have accumulated from stress, tension, trauma and injury; Nutritional Guidelines and Stretching Postures, which support on-going optimal health; and Self-Awareness as a key component in the healing process.Dr. Randolph Stone, DO, DC, ND, (1890-1981) was a proficient scholar of Osteopathic, Chiropractic and Naturopathic Medicine who traveled extensively and studied diverse components of both Eastern and Western Cultures. He recognized the universal concepts of healing and wisdom in Hermetic Philosophy, Ayurvedic Principles, Quantum Theory and Modern Physics, which he synthesized into the structure and development of Polarity Therapy. The basic precept is that energy underlies structure and physiology and that this vital energy is the inherent intelligence that facilitates the healing process. "Health is not merely of the body. It is the natural expression of the body, mind and soul when they are in harmony with the one life."
Holistic Philosophy proposes that the Human Energy Field is affected by diet, touch, trauma, attitudes, relationships, life experiences and environmental factors. It is an energy-based perspective that encourages individuals to create conscious lifestyle choices, which will develop and support optimal health. It realizes that life offers challenges, that the only constant there is, is change, that our body, mind, emotions and spirit are inter-connected and that we as an organism have a vast capacity for renewal. "If we really want health, we must be willing to work for it as we do for wealth, education or any other accomplishment in life."
A "typical" Polarity Session may last one to one and a half hours. It usually begins with a dialogue process to determine the focus of the session. Clients remain fully clothed and lie upon a Polarity Table. Loose comfortable clothing is recommended as most comfortable. The Polarity Practitioner may then utilize point specific contacts, gentle rocking and stretching, full hand contacts or off the body balancing. Relaxation and breathing techniques may also be incorporated. Potential results of a session are the alleviation of mental, emotional and physical symptoms. Individuals frequently feel balanced, refreshed and renewed. Stretching Postures and Nutritional Guidelines may be recommended.
Polarity Therapy Training Programs promote personal enrichment and offer a rewarding career opportunity. "Science is now verifying the presence of subtle energy fields as the primary organizing principles of life and declaring Energy Medicine as the Medicine of the 21st century." (J. Ferrara). Polarity Therapy is considered "one of the most comprehensive healing arts available today." It integrates well with other bodywork techniques, is useful for all healthcare practitioners and it interfaces well with modern medicine.
The American Polarity Therapy Association (APTA) is a national organization that was formed in 1985. The APTA sets standards, rules and regulations for the profession of Polarity Therapy. As a governing body, it has a Code of Ethics and a Standard for Practice. There are currently two levels of Approved Trainings: Associate Polarity Practitioner (APP) Training, which requires a minimum of 155 hours and Registered Polarity Practitioner (RPP) Training, which requires an additional 520 hours. This is a total of 675 hours of education and practicum. For APTA membership and information click here.
